Coder,

While I am not familiar with macs per se, mouth brooding bettas seem to (based on my experience) do better with a few more males than ladies, because the females are ready to spawn again before the male is ready to spit, so they tend to badger the males into spawning again and that ends up is a swallowed mouthful of eggs and you wonder why you never see any fry... So I would guess yes, a trio would be good if you have the room for them.

Now I'll let those that actaully have macs chime in =)

Yes i is best to have two males per female.Problem though is how aggresive males can be toward each other.

OK, so I was asking because I found a trio for sale but it was one male, two females. They would breed him to death huh? Does anyone use tank dividers? Especially for conditioning to breed I would think.

I didnt use dividers but I hav decided from now on i will.I built a flap into a permanent divider where I can let the femae to the males side when I feel he has been conditioned enough to spawn.I just dont want my little guy to be spawned to death lol.

I had 2 females in with my boy for a long time without any issues... unfortunately one of them met with a freak filter accident.

I've had many pairs of macs and found that you have to find a male and female that are compatible. I've had pairs that never bred, split them up and added them to another and had them breed on a constant basis. At my peak of keeping mac I was pumping out broods every month ranging from 30 to 70 frys. One advise for all, DONT FEED LIVE FOODS TO MACS. They are very susceptible to diseases. All my Macs have sense passed away or have been sold. Currently I have only 2 adult females and may look to get back into breeding them soon.

OK so I finally took the plunge and got a pair of Macs off aquabid. The seller had quite a resume and said that they were regular breeders. Don't think he was kidding, they showed up yesterday and I acclimated them, today..... Spawn.

Thanks guys, I'm excited, hope he holds. I'm not super mac expierienced. I think I will try to just do the same as what I did for the ocellatas. My male is really pretty, I wanted to get a good picture of him to share with you guys yesterday but I had the lights off for him to acclimate, and then I went to get one to share today and he was spawning. He's got chubby cheeks now.
