A few weeks ago, I got a rainbow shark. Since then, I've never really noticed it feeding, and I've tried everything - flakes, shrimp pellets, algae wafers, bloodworms, cucumbers, etc. From the picture, he looks skinny and sick to me, but he's looked that way since I've had him. At first he just hid all day, but the past couple weeks he's been acting a bit territorial towards the tetras (which completely ignore him as they're about his size), which I'm taking as a good sign of natural behavior, but he still doesn't look healthy to me.

Yea, he/she does look on the skinnier side and also a little pale.

Did you quarantine and de-worm him before putting him into the tank?

If he's not gaining weight but there's plenty of food present, it's possible he has parasites of some sort. I would try putting him in his own hospital tank and treating him with some prazi-pro if you have it.

I quarantined him when I got him, but I didn't de-worm him. Hopefully I'll be able to get into Asheville to find some medicine for him this week. Thanks for your help!

Now that he's in the tank with the other fish, you'll need to deworm all of them. It's important that you don't take fish out of quarantine if they're not eating and skinny. I don't mean to lecture or anything - just saying.

Personally, I like to deworm every fish I put in quarantine unless they come from a highly trusted private breeder.

He's in a 30 gallon (I know that is too small for an adult, but I'm working on getting a bigger one).

Normally I don't put them into the big tank if they aren't eating, but I thought he might just be stressed and would get better in the more natural-looking big tank. I've had the good fortune of never having to deal with parasites in the 6+ years of fish keeping, so this is new territory to me.
