unless you have a very strong desire to make a sponge filter, you can probably buy one for less than $10. You can try looking on ebay.

There's this old thread that might give you an idea: http://www.ultimateb...=1

So essentially you just need air flow thru a sponge?
This would work, correct?:
1.get a sponge that is an appropriate size for tank, put a hole in it to fit the pvc pipe in
2. drill holes on the bottom half (or so) in every which way and silicone a marble onto the bottom (side that goes in sponge)
3. get a check valve on the airline tubing
4. silicone the airline tubing onto the inside of the pvc pipe
5. stick the pvc pipe into the sponge far enough so that the holes are under the top of the sponge
6. turn her on and sit back and relax

Thats what I concluded after watching many youtube vids and that thread, I will use it in my qt tank so when I don't have any fish in qt I'll just have the sponge in one of the other filters to seed bacteria, that would all work right?

You don't have to use a marble. It can be anything that blocks the end and is weighted so the sponge will stay down. I don't silicone the tubing to the pvc. I just add an airstone to the tubing to keep it weighted inside the pvc. This way I can remove it for easy cleaning.
