I've just had a sort of major tank disaster and I'm hoping to use potassium permanganate to sterilize the driftwood, plants, substrate and filter material. I don't want to use bleach because I'm afraid that the plants would be damaged and that the driftwood would absorb and then leech bleach into the water. Could anyone tell me where I could buy this chemical? I have heard some conflicting information--one, that it could be found readily at hardware stores like Ace or Lowes; and two, that this product could only be ordered online because it is a powerful oxidizer, and that it is subject to hazmat fees. Which of these are more true? Does it simply vary by state? How safe is this chemical for plant and driftwood dips?

Thanks.

Well, you used to be able to get PP at drug or hardware stores, but with the semi-recent concerns over home-grown terrorism (PP can be used to make a mild explosive) it's getting harder and harder to find. You can buy some over the internet as a last resort.

Hydrogen peroxide or a 5% bleach solution would work just as well for what you need. Just rinse everything very well with a double-strength solution of water conditioner.

After a bunch of calling around, I have found that Ace Hardware does carry potassium permanganate in a variety of sizes--in case anyone else needs to know. :)

Yeah Ace carries it in liquid form in their pool supply section. About $10 for a lifetime supply LOL

I think it's just the crystalized/powder form that's gotten hard to find?

AquaBotanic also carries it.
